Gdynia Maritime University Hosts National Celebrations of World Hydrography Day 2026

The ceremony, hosted by the GMU Faculty of Navigation, brought together representatives from the Hydrographic Service of the Polish Navy, the scientific community, maritime administration institutions, maritime sector enterprises, and members of the Polish Hydrographic Society. The event was officially opened by the Chief of the Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy, Commander Dariusz Beczek. 

Later in the event, Commander Piotr Kozłowski of the Hydrographic Office of the Polish Navy presented the service's operations for the current year. Following this, the President of the Polish Hydrographic Society, Commander (Retd) Henryk Nitner, outlined the milestones achieved during the last 20 years of the Society's work.

Speaking on behalf of the co-organisers, the Rector of Gdynia Maritime University, Professor Adam Weintrit, highlighted the University's long-standing ties with the hydrographic community, particularly its close collaboration with the International Hydrographic Bureau. He noted his own deep, multi-decade personal connection to the field, adding that his academic research had frequently drawn upon the achievements and insights developed by its specialists. 

A key highlight of the programme was the presentation of the ‘Hydrographer's Laurel’ award, which recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of marine hydrography. This year, the distinction was awarded to Commander Witold Stasiak. Attendees then took part in a presentation session featuring papers on modern hydrographic survey technologies, the utilisation of navigational data, and the education of future specialists in marine hydrography.

Throughout the event, participants were able to explore stands from various exhibitors showcasing state-of-the-art solutions used in hydrographic research and marine navigation. An additional attraction was the opportunity to tour the Polish Navy hydrographic survey vessel ORP Heweliusz, which was open to the public at the Pomeranian Quay in Gdynia.

World Hydrography Day is celebrated annually on the initiative of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) to highlight the vital role of hydrography in ensuring the safe and sustainable use of the world's seas and oceans.
