Horyzont II Heads for Spitsbergen
On 1 June 2026, Gdynia Maritime University's training and research vessel Horyzont II departed from the Fishing Vessel Quay in Gdynia, embarking on another voyage to Spitsbergen.
Commanded by Captain Piotr Grzywaczewski, the vessel set course for the Arctic on a training and supply mission supporting Polish research stations in Svalbard.
The vessel was bid farewell by Dariusz Jellonnek, Master Mariner, Director of the Maritime Operations Department, and Professor Piotr Jankowski, Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
The voyage involves 15 permanent crew members, 18 cadets from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Gdynia Maritime University accompanied by their supervisor, and 15 polar researchers from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. For the students, the expedition provides an opportunity to gain practical skills and hands-on experience in the operation of a vessel under real-life conditions in the waters of the North Atlantic and the Arctic.
During the voyage, Horyzont II will deliver essential supplies to the Polish Polar Station Hornsund and other research facilities, including food, fuel, scientific equipment and materials required for research activities. The voyage will also facilitate the rotation of scientific teams conducting research in Spitsbergen.
According to the itinerary, the vessel will first call at Hornsund and then proceed to Longyearbyen. After returning to Hornsund, Horyzont II will begin its voyage back to Poland. The vessel is scheduled to return to Gdynia on 21 June 2026.
